The “Pot Flower Pattern” or “Purnakhata” is a Buddhist symbol of fertility and prosperity. This pattern reflects the belief in the power of creation and peace. The pot filled with lotus flowers represents worship of the Buddha and wishes the owner success in all that he desires. The vines that surround both sides of the pot symbolize life and prosperity.
The Purnakhata motif often appears in Lanna art, such as in gold patterns, stucco, and wood carvings. The oldest known flower pot pattern was found in the Buddha Vihara of Wat Phra That Lampang Luang in the early 21st Buddhist century. It is characterized by a wide-mouthed pot filled with flowers and climbing vines, decorated with images of birds flying above, which is believed to have been influenced by Sri Lankan art.
In later eras, the pattern of the flower pots has developed into more complex patterns, such as in the temple of Wat Pong Yang Khok, Lampang Province. The pattern is designed to be delicate and has elements that combine Lanna art and influences from late Ayutthaya art.
The flower pot pattern is not only an ornament of sacred places, but also a reflection of the culture, beliefs and sustainable artistic identity of Lanna.
