Earthenware

Pottery has been a part of human life since ancient times, serving as essential containers for food, water, and various rituals. Its usage has continued to the present day, adapting and evolving with each community's needs and habitat conditions. As a result, pottery represents a cultural heritage reflecting human ingenuity, lifestyle, and creativity over time.

In Thailand, pottery has a rich history dating back to the early Sukhothai period. The renowned Thai porcelain, including Sangkhalok wares, originated from Chaliang, located in what is now Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat in Sukhothai Province. During the Sukhothai period, trade connections with China were established, and pottery techniques were influenced by Chinese styles, owing to King Ramkhamhaeng's visit to China and the collaboration with Javanese potters who built kilns in Sukhothai and Heaven (present-day Si Satchanalai).

There are two notable types of Sukhothai pottery:
Crockery, assumed to have been made during the Lopburi period and resembling Si Satchanalai pottery, featuring burnt brown paint.
Sukhothai wares, crafted in the areas of Wat Si Chum and the rubber forest in Sukhothai, reflecting Chinese influences and mainly producing cups, bowls, jars, and various utensils.
Throughout history, pottery has been a significant part of human culture, connecting past traditions to the present practices.
